Interiors are a crucial component in creating immersive and realistic maps. Whether you’re designing a home, a castle, or an underground bunker, the interior design can make or break the player's experience. Here are some tips on how to create immersive interiors that will leave a lasting impression on your players.

Gather Reference Images

Before you begin, gather reference images to help guide your design. These can be images of real-life interiors, or concept art from other games or movies. Use these images to help you choose a colour palette, select textures, and create furniture.

Select Your Colour Palette

Once you’ve gathered your reference images, select a colour palette for your interior. Consider the mood you're trying to create and the overall style of the structure. Neutral colours like beige, grey, and white can create a modern and sleek look, while warm colours like red and orange can make a space feel cosy and inviting. Use colour theory wisely to influence the ambiance of your space, and to control the aesthetic message.

Lay Out Your Floor Plan

Next, lay out your floor plan. Consider the different spaces you want to create and their unique purposes. Think about entryways, kitchens, living rooms, bathrooms, bedrooms, and another special-purpose rooms. Add stairs and other key structural details to create a sense of depth and realism.

Texture the Walls, Ceilings, and Floors

After you’ve created your floorplan, texture the walls, ceilings, and floors. Use different textures indifferent rooms to add interest and ambiance. For example, you might use wood panelling in a study or stone tiles in a kitchen. The colours used in rooms can influence the feeling of size: e.g. To create a sense of expansion in the direction of the end walls in a square room, make the two side walls dark and the two end walls lighter.

Create Key Furniture Items

Once you’ve textured the space, create the key furniture items. Chairs, tables, fireplaces, and countertops are all essential items that can help direct movement within the space. Consider using these objects to lead the player through a space or to a specific feature.

Light the Space

Finally, light the space according to the desired ambiance. Use light-emitting blocks as the light source and consider using light blocks as invisible sources of light that can add intensity. This will help create a sense of atmosphere and immersion.
